Harrington really knows how to write a fun, quirky mystery that keeps me guessing and this book is no exception!

Perception is just, essentially, a damn good book. Clare is one of the best snarky heroines I've ever read about, from her witty one-liners to her logical thinking when it comes to the mystery-aspect of the movie. Nothing ever feels forced coming out of her mouth and you basically want to be her best friend. I like that she stays consistent from one book to the next but still manages to come off more mature and definitely more determined when another murder pops up into town. She thinks like teens think and that's what makes her genuine and real.

Harrington's writing style is simply and easy to follow while still flowing seamlessly enough to keep the action going throughout the book. Not once are you bored because there's just so much going on! Between the murder mystery Clare is determined to solve (even if her mother doesn't approve), to her brother's mysterious ways of locking himself up in his room, and the full bloom of her love triangle between Justin and Gabriel, there isn't a dull moment in Clarity's life!

This love triangle better not turn you off because it's crazy well done! Justin is Clare's ex-boyfriend who made a mistake and is now desperate to get her back, and he really brings it to the table. He's sweet and funny and he acknowledges his mistakes and makes up for it by saving her life in Clarity and being himself in Perception! But ultimately, i'm a Gabriel girl myself. Funny, mysterious enough to keep me loving him but not enough to make me want to punch him in the face, and just sooo sweet. I like that neither side ever tried to force her to chose or gave her an ultimatum, they let her come up with whatever decision she wanted on her own. And while it was important, I like that it wasn't the only thing on Clare's mind! She approached the situation between the three of them calmly and rationally and sometimes, didn't even think about it at all!

The killer? Was my second guess! Although i'm kind of still suspicious about my first guess soooo...WHO KNOWS!

Overall, this series is funny, cute, and well-written! I can't wait to see what's coming next,

J.K. Rowling has a new book... and it's not for kids. The author has signed a world English deal with Little, Brown, selling print, e-book, and audio rights to her first novel for adults. Rumors have been going around it might be a CRIME FICTION NOVEL.

Scott Tracey's new series beginning with Moonset, about the five children of warlock terrorists, who must struggle against the descrutive legecy left behind by their parents, all while resisting their own capacity for darkness, to Brian Farrey-Latz at Flux, in a two-book deal, by Ginger Clark at Curtis Brown (World English)

Andrea Spooner at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers has signed SF author and 2011 Printz winner Paolo Bacigalupi to a three-book deal, including his first middle grade novel. That novel, Zombie Baseball Beatdown is slated for spring 2013; it follows three boys on a baseball team who discover that tainted meat from their town’s meatpacking plant is turning people and animals into zombies. After that, tentatively scheduled for fall 2013, will be Bacigalupi’s first contemporary YA novel, The Doubt Factory, about a teenage girl who discovers that her father heads an organization that provides dangerous false messaging to society about global warming and other issues. The final book of the deal, Seascape, a YA novel set in the same futuristic world of Ship Breaker and the forthcoming The Drowned Cities, is scheduled for fall 2014. Martha Millard at the Martha Millard Literary Agency brokered the deal for world English rights.

‘The Selection,’ by Kiera Cass is set 300 years in the future where a lottery is set up to pick contestants in a competition to become queen of the nation. The novel was picked up by the CW as a television pilot – and Aimee Teegarden of Friday Night Lights, Scream 4, and Prom has been chosen for the lead according to TV Line! The concept and post-apocalyptic time period has brought comparisons to the hugely popular upcoming film and book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. I personally think the television show will be very different, but I am excited to have something exciting and dystopian as a TV show!

Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror) is in talks to star in ‘Rosaline,’ a twist on Romeo and Juliet that’s based on Rebecca Serle’s debut novel When You Were Mine. Rosaline is the woman Romeo first claims to love from afar before he becomes enamored with Juliet. ‘Rosaline’ tells Romeo’s ex-girlfriend’s side of the story. Michael Sucsy is directing from a script by Scott Neustader and Michael H. Weber [(500) Days of Summer]. There had been talk of Hailee Steinfeld, Dave Franco and Deborah Ann Woll starring, but deals were never able to work out.

Emma Watson is in ‘final negotiations’ to take on the role of Belle in an adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) is officially on board to direct the new live-action adaptation. He was originally on board only as a producer. Andrew Davis (Bridget Jones’ Dairy) is set to write the screenplay. It was rumored almost seven months ago that del Toro was adapting this story with Emma Watson in mind, but only now does it appear it will actually happen.

According to Variety, Moira Buffini, who is the screenwriter of films such as Jane Eyre (starring Mia Wasikowska, and Michael Fassbender), Byzantium (Starring Saoirse Ronan), and more – has signed on to pen ‘The Night Circus‘ by Erin Morgenstern.

Don't Breathe A Word is an interesting book and definitely a quick read!

The story centers around a girl named Joy who has severe asthma and is constantly under watch by her parents until her brother moves out, her primary care-taker. Then, her boyfriend Asher starts to take over. And when I say "take-over", I literally mean take over. He's rude, abusive in both a mental, verbal, and eventually physical way, and you start the story with Joy simply unable to take it anymore, causing her to run away and become homeless.

Holly Cupala has the kind of writing style that packs a punch without being too flowery or over-descriptive. She alludes to the "incident" that caused Joy to run away in the first place any times, making it something Joy keeps thinking about in small pieces until you finally get the whole picture. As for Joy herself...I wasn't really feeling her. I felt like she grew a lot throughout the book but, especially with scenes that included Asher, I was like: GIRL WHAT ARE YOU DOING? She comes into her own in her own way though, which I can appreciate.

Something that did confuse me however was the fact that she had severe asthma and I kept thinking that this was going to be a major problem because you don't usually put SEVERE in front of something if it's not...you know, severe. And it's a problem, but it's not anything big. As long as she had her meds, even in the Winter, she was alright. I don't know how asthma works since I don't have it, but I felt that was just brushed over when  it was supposed to be an important part of the story (in my mind).

Asher was a total asshat and I think that's what frustrated me the most about Joy. You get to see when she first meets him and he was...not appealing in any way. He's not charming or sweet in the beginning; he's pushy and arrogant and pretentious and I just have no idea what she saw in him. I understand the idea of Joy wanting something that was always in control in her life, because DUDE. NOTHING APPEALING.

On the other hand, I did love Creed. Tortured street musician that's sweet, caring, and a really friendly guy, he gave Joy the love that she needed.

As for the ending, that ALSO didn't rub me the right way. I'm a optimistic person guys, you know me. But the ending ties up in this perfect little bow that kind of just...didn't seem realistic at all. Some of the side-character gets into some pretty deep crap and suddenly, at the end, everything's okay! Nothing happened! Everyone's fine! Especially May? I was completely surprised.

Food For Thought -- Heroines And Their Abilities (1)

This is a feature that'll do every once in a while where I just talk a little bit about something that's bothering me at the moment and then you comment and we can discuss in the comments! Sound good? AWESOME.

THOUGHT: Why do heroines get so mad when the love interest/family member doesn't tell them about their power? 

So I was reading a book recently where the heroine gets all angry and says she was "betrayed" by her love interest because he didn't tell her she was a supernatural creature until they had proof to show her.

And that's always something that's confused me in books because would you really have believed them if they'd told you without having any sort of proof? If they just told you outright without any sort of way to show they're not crazy; I'd think you were crazy for believing them!

And ON A SIDE NOTE: why does this always cause them to run into the arms of the enemy? Because honestly, they're as likely (and probably will) lie to you if they have to.

And it's swoony to lie to protect you, but isn't keeping it a secret until you're ready for it some form of protection?

High Fantasy? Check. Badass Heroine? Check. Crazy Adventures? Check. Marmell takes you on a wild ride following Adrienne (known on the streets as Widdershins) and her discovery of not only her past, but just what the hell is going on with her future.

I loved reading every minute of Widdershins story. She was funny and charming and incredibly bad ass, as all thief's are. I like that she has that....thieves swagger about her, because it's always amazing reading about a confident and kick-ass heroine every once in a while. But this didn't mean that Adrienne didn't have her weak moments, where she didn't know what to do and was weighted down by the expectations of everyone around her. She was the biggest, baddest thief around, but she was also a teenage girl who lost both her biological family, her adopted father, and her fellow worshipers (more on that later) all in a matter of years.

The setting and dynamic of the world Marmell has created really is rich and believable. The whole mythology and backstory behind the Gods and the Royal families was fantastic and provided the kind of scenery necessary in a High Fantasy; original and creative!

I liked the writing even though it confused me at times. The book is told in third-person but it goes from Real Time to "Two years ago" "Seven Years Ago" etc, etc, through the chapters. And while this opened up an entire backstory to Adrienne that was lovely and heart-breaking, it also made me quite confused as to who was who when it come to the character. Even after finished, there are still some people mentioned that I can't remember who they are. Reading about Adrienne's past though was definitely one of my favorite parts considering it shows you just how much it molded her into the person she is in the present.

The side characters were all incredibly lovely and while there was no romance in this book, i'm expecting something in the sequel! Renard was funny, witty, and he'd do anything for Widdershins, which I loved. Genevieve was a great friend and Robin was a lovely young girl, both fabulous people who helped make Widdershins seem more human than just a cold-blooded thief. Alexandre from her past was an amazing father figure and the villains were quite...well, villainous! And I expect to see a lot more of Julian Bouniard in the future!

Overall, I definitely recommend and I can't wait to see more from this new YA imprint!

Now Ethan has to not only find himself again, but reconnect with the life he left behind when a women called Ellen took him for her own AND convince his younger brother, who hates not being the center of attention, that he really is, in fact, Ethan.

I encountered the same problem I always do with McMann's story where I'm like: SO INTENSE. The story just keeps building and building and the stakes are raised and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time because I was dying to know if Ethan was ever going to remember and just...find out more about his life before  he found his family. But then the problem comes in: the short-ness and the writing.

Now I love me some short books. I usually read HUGE books (it's an addiction of mine) so i'm glad to sit down every once in a while BUT GAH. I want to know more! I wanted to know more about Ethan's past and his time with Ellen and his relationship with Cami to develop more and JUST EVERYTHING. And then there's  the fact that I feel her writing is very choppy and doesn't flow (and not in a Shatter Me Choppy way, which is awesome) and i've seen this in both Dead To You and the Wake series so I know it's her way of writing character's voices but it just pulls me out of the story so much and not a fan.

Ethan is a complex character in and of himself. He's desperate, lonely, and maybe even a little bit crazy. I wish I could've seen his character develop more and come into himself but again, the short problem. Gracie had to be my favorite character because she was lovable and understanding and she was just a little girl! That innocence really contrasted against Ethan's stark and raw narrative. Blake was a total douche bag and urgh... every time he was punched, he so deserved it.

AND DEAR GOD, IS IT A STAND-ALONE? Because with that ending, it should be a crime to leave it at a stand-alone. First I get a super skinny book and then you stick that kind of ending and that last line and why, Lisa? Why would you do that to me? Jeez!

Before I begin my review: I KNOW RIGHT? If you don't follow my twitter, you don't know that I've been book-bullied into reading this book for AGES. It's been almost two years of people telling me to JUST READ IT ALREADY because Graceling is my favorite book and I finally picked it up and read it. And i'm so glad I did! (And before you go asking: Graceling is still my favorite of all three.)

Cashore has the kind of writing ability that wows me, people. Where Graceling is fast-paced and actiony, Fire is slow and lush but still completely enthralling me with being in the mind of this girl! She has the ability to still have her writing style in a book but still manage to capture two completely different books and mind sets. Katsa is fire and impulsive and bold where Fire is much more mature and contemplative and I loved it!

Fire was a little mopey at times, but girl, if I was in her position? That kind of life gets awful fast. And while everyone is always pining for the type of beauty that makes people lose their heads; Fire's GOT THAT. AND IT SUCKS. I mean, Fire can't even walk into a village without two guys starting a fight over her or women glaring at her because they're husbands are suddenly cat-calling and salivating over her. And it's not her! And she also manages to write a character of immense beauty (I mean, guys, when she looks at HERSELF in the mirror; she takes her own breath away) without making them sound shallow or conceited. It was just a fact: Fire is a monster and as a monster, she is beauty. And she can control minds and be awesome.

The plot is a lot more slow-paced than Graceling but I found myself completely immersed in the court intrigue.  Now that the Crazy King has stepped off the throne, being are getting all uppity and wanting to declare war and conquer the capitol city, which ain't gonna fly with King Nash or the rest of the royal family. It's a lot more traditional high-fantasy than Graceling is (in the sense that folks, it's slow. It's the type of book you read to savor, not to get your blood pumping) but I enjoyed it all the same. Also? The whole concept of monsters and their influence on people was fascinating. Seeing all that Fire and her father could do -- and did do -- was frightening and intriguing all at once.

But that really took it was the characters. The Royal Family: Clara, who I want as best friend; Garan, who is lovely and funny in his own way and also kind of a total genius; Nash, who i'm immensely proud of for learning how to use his head every once in a while; and Brigan, who is brave and kind-hearted and lovely. Then you have the guards like Mila and little Hanna and THEN ARCHER. Archer was definitely a special character. He was an asshat at times and then he was so desperate and lonely and lovely, and I can't help but keep a special place in my heart for him. Also: LECK IS SO EVIL ARGH. He's only 10 or 11 in this book and he still creeps me out. He doesn't make a LOT of appearance but when he does? *shudder*

The romance is slow and not the center of attention, considering this book is more focused on Fire finding out who she is as a person and how she fits into this crazy city and this crazy family, but it's lovely all the same. It's not obvious how the romance builds but it's there in glances and late night talks and it's so subtle that when it finally happens, you don't realize how desperate you were for it to happen!

In the end, not my favorite of the three but really good regardless!

The 5 Stages of Reading (A Great Book)

Something I thought of one day and decided to finally do :P

1. Suspicion 
        Usually, good books get a reputation. They get HYPE. And the hype monster can be useful and amazing and wonderful BUT it can also be misleading and disappointing. So when you're this far in the game; hyped books? You're wary. You're curious. It's like going on a date with your friend's friend. You've heard so much great things about it that you're just instantly suspicious about the fact you think you know everything about him but you don't.

2. Comfortable
        You've hit the groove! This book actually might have potential! The heroine is funny, the love interest is mysterious or sweet or both, the plot is starting to show itself little by little. Hey, maybe even the writing is beautiful! But you still haven't reached that point. The point of no return.

3. Mania
        You've gotten to the point where you want to KICK YOURSELF for not reading this book earlier! It's well-paced and smart and everything you wanted and you just want to savor every word while simultaneously flipping through the pages as fast as you can!

4. DESPERATION
        WHY HAVEN'T THEY GOTTEN TOGETHER YET? WHY CAN'T SHE SEE WHAT'S GOING ON? WHY IS HE SO EVIL? WHAT IS THE BIG SECRET? WHO IS THAT? WHAT IS HER POWER? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING? AHHHHHHHHH.

5a. Depression / Content
         It's over. 5a is most common in stand-alones because there's nothing after! A neat package, a beginning, middle, and end. And you're happy! People got together, bad guys were thwarted, plot twists unraveled. But you're also sad because those characters are FOREVER YOURS and you want more adventures.

5b. Impatience
         WHY DOES THE SEQUEL COME OUT IN A YEAR? THAT'S TOO LONG RJGNKDT OH MY GODDDDD.

5c. Catatonia 
          Rare, but it happens. That moment after you finish a book where you're either in tears or just awe because the sheer awesomeness was so great its blinded you a little bit. Your mind is a jumbled mess trying to put together the power of what you just read and you want to flip to the first page once you're coherent and start all over again!

Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl--and herself--than first meets the eye.

Now, I had HIGH expectations for this book. If you didn't know, Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies of all time, so when I decided to take a crack at the book, I was nervous! But you don't even have to worry because the book and the movie are two COMPLETELY different things and I didn't find myself comparing them plot-wise at any moment!

The book is still centered around Sophie and the fact that she is turned into an old lady by the Witch of the Waste because Sophie is a BIC* and that lady wishes she could be as awesome as her (you didn't think I was actually going to tell you the reason, right?) So when Sophie goes on a journey to try to turn herself back into a young girl, she stumbles upon Howl's Moving Castle, where three people live: Calcifer: a fire demon who is stuck in this house forever and ever; Michael: a fifteen year old boy (in the movie, he's like eight! I was like: WHAT) who is Howl's apprentice; and Howl: resident drama king and all-around powerful wizard and loving prick.

Book Sophie is hilarious. She's the eldest of three and in this magic world THE ELDEST GETS NOTHING. The youngest is the one who gets to marry money and have a happy life but the eldest? They have to work and inherit the family business and do boring stuff like make hats. I mean, there's a point where Sophie is inside so much that she's afraid to go outside! But the minute she turns into an old lady? She's a feisty thing! Her and Howl argue constantly and she isn't going to let him run her over with his attitude like he does Michael! Plus, nothing phases her. She sees she's an old lady and instead of wigging out and crying and going crazy, she's just like: "Well, better get out of here before Mom gets home."

The plot is a lot more complicated in the book than it is in the movie! Sophie has more than one sister and they play a big role in the story (instead of in the movie, where Lettie gets one scene where they talk about how Howl eats the souls of pretty girls) as well as the fact that people who are alive in the movie are DEAD IN THE BOOK. I was like -- what?! But all in all, it flowed well and sent me on a whirlwind of a story.

And then we have side-characters. Michael had to be my favorite; he was kind and funny and put up with Howl's insanity, which is more than I can say for a lot of people. Calcifer was the same as in the movie, which I approved of, and then we get to Howl. In the back of the book Jones talks about how in the movie, Sophie and Howl are a lot more gentle and noble and this is so true. Howl can be a total prick sometimes in the book! He's dramatic and unreliable and unpredictable but he's also sweet and loving and complex. Their relationship is hilarious and adorable and I like that there's never a dull moment between them!

Overall, the book and the movie are two total separate entities but equally wonderful!
